Happy New Year / Buon Anno! It was 14°F/-10°C out when I left the studio this evening. But inside the old building, a former bank, the radiators were still cranking away, thank God.
Winter in New Hampshire. My wife and I moved back here last fall after seven years abroad (Dũsseldorf, Germany and Florence, Italy). Thanks to a generous couple found through a mutual friend, I had a studio in their historic home all winter, with their sweet old dog often keeping me company.
In March we returned to Italy for three months. It's hard to stay away. Fortunately studio space was available at Artlab Cura, the co-working space near Sant’Ambrogio. In June we said goodbye to friends and the tiny flat where we’d lived for five years, and I sent all my work–plus a large new stash of posters and other papers I had collected–back to the US.
And I searched for a studio here all over again. I worked in the basement of our old house for a while–not as bad as you'd think: cheap rent and plenty of space, at least until I brought in three cords of firewood. But in September I found my current studio, next door to the post office in Plymouth, NH and until my (affordable) dream studio, this one stays.
Four studios in one year!! Each move slowed me down, but you get used to rolling with the punches. I go back to Italy in April, not to Florence but a small village in Maremma, southwest of Siena, and once again look for temporary studio space. And when I return to NH in June, this time my studio will be ready and waiting.
